20 Things I Learned in College

I’m halfway through. In 2 years time, I’ll be exiting the historic Arch of the Centuries. And before I start calling myself a “college junior”, I want to recap all the things I learned since DAY 1.

1. It’s okay to step out of your comfort zone. There’s beauty in the world out there, just waiting for you to see.

2. Getting comfortable means gaining new friends, and unlocking new adventures.

3. Freedom comes with A LOT of responsibility.

4. Look back to where you came from but not too much. Don’t wallow too much on the past. Life only moves forward.

5. College is not always about parties. It is, and should always be, about studying. College is still a school, you know.

6. Alcohol can also be consumed on happy days. Let go of the emo-ish and underground drinking sessions. Live your life and have fun.

7. Parents can get extra paranoid during college years so make sure to show them more love and patience. That should make them feel a little more secured.

8. Find time to be with your high school buddies. That friendship would mean so much to you and to them.

9. It’s never too late to discover your talents. Try new things and you might just learn something you really enjoy.

10. Love goes hand-in-hand with getting hurt. DEAL WITH IT.

11. Take more time alone than with other people. Sometimes, being alone makes a big difference.

12. Entering college means hitting the reset button. Forget about all the bitterness of the past. This is college! Anything can happen.

13. Do more of what makes you happy.

14. Don’t let pressure hit you. Stay focused on your goals.

15. It won’t hurt to treat yourself once in a while.

16. There will be a lot of sleepless nights so make sure to stay healthy and take care of yourself. Look good, feel good.

17. You’re an adult now. Mom and Dad won’t be there to do your project anymore. Learn to do those simple things on your own.

18. Don’t let others label you. Identify yourself.

19. When the road gets a little rough and bumpy, that’s when you push harder.

20. In whatever you do, nothing will ever compare to the memories you shared with the people you love the most.

Keep it going! I’m ready. >:)

Home Alone

It’s just the second week of summer break and I. AM. EXTREMELY BORED. I mean it’s possible not to be bored because I’ve got a summer job three times a week and I’ve got the remaining 4 days, cooling myself down at home.

This is what summer is like for me on those 4 days

Wake up – Go online – Eat while still online – Bath – Go online again – Shower – Sleep

Yes. It’s a bum. Well, sometimes I jog with my brother but that would just take an hour of the 24 hours I have.

I thought I could hang out with my cousins once school is over. I didn’t see this coming. My brother’s got a job. My cousins are on internship. My other cousins are already 23-24 years old, and just maybe too old for some pep talk in the living room. Well, yes, I do have other cousins who are younger… By 11 years. I might be too old for their games by now.

I have two other cousins who are the same age as I am, all three of us are born in ’95 and we were so close. We were so close. Were. We were. Emphasis on were. You ask why?

The other one quit college and is now working, spending her paycheck on shopping, partying, and dating her girlfriend.

The other one is too busy to chat with me because she would rather stay out of the house, under the scorching sun with her friends and stay out until 9PM. And when she gets home by 10, she would be too busy fulfilling her duties as a girlfriend to her boyfriend.

3 months vacation was an excuse for me when I looked for a contractual job. The real reason was I knew I was being left out. Everyone in the house is growing up; they’re all employed, with a stable love relationship, or if not, a nice set of friends who they would hang out with almost everyday. Where am I, though? Well, here, on my swivel chair, waiting for people to open the door. I don’t know how long I’ll wait for them to come back but I’ll be here. Although I admit that one day, I’ll be as busy as them, I’ll make it a point to spend as much time with my family as I am spending now in my student years. I don’t want my 8-year-old cousin to feel left out in the future.

I’m scared to say goodbye ’cause what’s after that, I don’t know.

That should be the most hipster title I have made up so far.

Last semester, I posted something for the sembreak. Now that it’s summer break, and summer’s obviously longer, I can’t help but feel sad. I feel worse day by day. Things are just getting better in our block and it’s such a sad thought that we’ll soon be parting. Add it up that we’ll be reblocking on the 4th year and this coming year should be our last as a block. I can feel that I’ll be shedding tears anytime soon.

I’m scared to say goodbye ’cause what’s after that, I don’t know. I can’t express exactly how I feel for summer. On one hand, I feel ecstatic that I’ll be on break with acads and on the other, I feel extremely sad that I won’t see my friends as much. Who knows what might happen in 3 months? 3 months is 3 months. Anything can happen; may it be shit or hit. I never felt this way before probably because I know that my friends live nearby. Now that we’re in college, we come from a lot of corners of the archipelago and it’s such a luxury to meet each other over the break.

I just wish that this break be epic. YOLO. That’s the least and the only thing I can do. I can only hope for the best and expect the worse. (J)
